How it all began
“And then he asked me to play hostage… who even asks to play hostage on a first date?”
— Katherine
“That’s not true — I never asked her to play; I was just explaining the game.”
— Everett
Of all places, Everett and Kate met on Snapchat. Welcome to modern dating, folks!
Kate swears they would have never become a thing if she hadn’t asked him to call that very first night they texted - though both like to believe that God would’ve found a way to bring them together anyway.
That first call? Four hours long. Everett talked about disc golf and school; Kate talked (a lot) about a reality TV show she was watching. Shockingly, Everett listened with zero complaints - and honestly, that’s still pretty much what they do to this day.
The First “Date” (if you can call it that)
A few days later, Kate was getting antsy to meet this mystery guy she’d been talking to. So at 10 p.m. on March 5th, they decided - on a whim - to meet halfway at NorthPark Mall in Dallas.
Now, was that the smartest decision?
Absolutely not.
Kate was going against every piece of advice her mom ever gave her - it was basically like she was auditioning to be the next true crime podcast episode. Everett, on the other hand, was just thrilled she said yes.
The plan was simple: drive around Dallas and talk in person. Everett drove first, and about 20 minutes in, he brought up this game called “Hostage.”
Kate’s face immediately lost color. She thought this was it - her final chapter. Everett, meanwhile, yelled, “NO, NO, NO, THAT’S NOT WHAT I MEANT!”
To this day, they still argue about whether he actually asked her to play or was just “talking about it.” (Kate says yes. Everett says no. We’ll let you decide.)
They eventually made their way back to the mall parking lot, not quite ready to say goodbye. That’s when a woman in a white Kia Soul - apparently “security” - pulled up and kicked them out.
So naturally… they just moved to another parking lot.
Kate spent the rest of the night talking about LEGO Batman (for hours), while Everett questioned every decision that led him there. At one point, Kate threw something at a raccoon “to see what it would do.” (It ran. She screamed.)
And that’s how their first night went. Pure chaos - but somehow perfect.
From late-night drives to way too many Chili’s dates, hiking trips (where Everett “accidentally” kicked Kate in the face - yes, really), Target runs, Kali walks, and endless disc golf games… they just kept choosing each other.
Fast-forward to today - they’ve laughed, grown, and survived a few questionable decisions along the way, and now they can’t wait to celebrate their love, laughter, and lifelong game of “hostage” with all of you.
